The Secretary-General of International Maritime Organization warned on Tuesday commercial shipping operators against transiting the Strait of Hormuz without credible security guarantees.

He stated that "safe passage cannot be considered to exist" in the highly volatile region and that operational or commercial pressures do not justify putting seafarers' lives at extreme risk. He also emphasized that ship masters and shipping companies bear the ultimate responsibility for conducting thorough voyage risk assessments.
