Hundreds of paper balloons light up the skies over Patzcuaro during the Cantoya Festival

Hundreds of handmade paper balloons illuminated the night sky over the lakeside town of Patzcuaro in Mexico's western state of Michoacan during the 10th International Cantoya Festival, drawing more than 20,000 visitors as teams from Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Italy, El Salvador and France launch over 250 traditional balloons in celebration of one of the region's most distinctive artisanal traditions.

The landmark 10th anniversary edition of the festival concluded over the weekend, running from Friday to Sunday.
