Persistent heavy rains have been caused by Typhoon Yagi in the South China Sea and a depression in the west-central and northwest Bay of Bengal since September 10th.

These continuous rains have led to rising water levels in creeks and rivers, resulting in flash floods in low-lying areas of Mandalay Region and surrounding villages. Although these areas experienced severe inundation, water levels are now gradually receding.

On September 14th, Mandalay Region Chief Minister U Myo Aung, accompanied by other concerned officials inspected the flood affected low-lying areas in Kyaukse District and nearby areas due to the sudden rise in the ZawGyi, PanLaung and SaMone Rivers.

They then met with flood-affected residents, offered words of encouragement and provided essential foodstuff and supplies at temporary evacuation camps. At temporary relief camps in Kyaukse, Myittha, and Kume Townships, the Chief Minister and party met with flood affected victims, inspected health care, water and electricity provisions, heard reports on road and bridge restoration plans and fulfilled the needs.

They then received donations of food, water and cash from the regional government and generous donors and encouraged health care personnel. The Chief Minister and party later visited Kyaukse People’s Hospital.

During the visit, they discussed the impact of the flood and current conditions, observed the relocation of diagnostic equipments to safer areas and encouraged the patients undergoing treatment while providing nutritional supplements and fulfilling the needs.

Well-wishers also contributed a 4.5-inch well and a submersible pump to enhance the hospital’s water access. They also inspected the damaged road frame on the Han Myint Mo-MyoGyi-YwaNgan-AungBan Road and the damages on the Yangon-Mandalay Highway.  During the inspection, they reviewed restoration measures for quickly reopening these sections and fulfilled the needs.
