Floods, landslides hit southern Chinese provinces

Torrential rains have displaced tens of thousands of residents in provinces in southern China in recent days. In Guangdong province, storms on Monday flooded villages, streets and farmlands in Heyuan city.

Several rivers exceeded their warning levels in Jiangxi province and were expected to continue to rise with further downpours forecast in the coming days. Over 80,000 people have been affected by the rainfall and it caused economic loss of about 16.5 million USD. In Fujian province, conditions eased on Tuesday, leaving muddy streets in Sanming city. State newspaper Global Times reported that at least three people died in a house collapse in Sanming.
