China's southern provinces have been hit by several rainstorms over the past week, causing serious floods and mudslides in cities and rural areas.

In the autonomous Guangxi region, about 145,000 people were evacuated and more than 2,700 houses collapsed, according to a government report.

A further 10,000 houses were damaged to varying degrees. A wooden building was washed away in Rongshui County on Saturday, killing five people, according to the local emergency department.

Heavy rain has also battered parts of China's Guizhou province since Friday night, causing floods that have submerged villages and damaged infrastructure.

Also on Saturday, rescuers in Zhejiang province built a rescue channel with safety ropes and a ladder to evacuate villagers surrounded by flood water, state broadcaster CCTV reported.
