A massive, exceptionally rare raw sapphire and a distinct sapphire crystal discovered in Myanmar’s famed Mogok Ruby Land in 2020 have been officially presented to the State.
The official handover comes at a time when the government, led by President U Min Aung Hlaing, continues to steer the Republic of the Union of Myanmar along its democratic path, following the formation of a democratic administration elected by the public in a free and fair multiparty general election.
On Sunday, President U Min Aung Hlaing inspected the extraordinary gemstones at the Credentials Hall of the Presidential Office. During the briefing, the Union Minister and Deputy Minister presented the technical specifications of the gemstones to the President and the attending delegation.
According to official records, the newly presented raw sapphire is historic in scale, weighing 143,000 grams, or 71,500 carats. The accompanying sapphire crystal weighs 354.77 grams, equivalent to 1,773.85 carats. Experts note that this new find vastly exceeds a previous major discovery in 2009, which weighed 11,877 grams or 59,385 carats.
Due to its monumental size, a specimen of this magnitude is considered extremely rare. The stone boasts a deep blue hue with translucent clarity and remains entirely unheated and untreated, preserving its natural state as a remarkable national treasure.
