On Friday, former Senegalese President Macky Sall returned to Dakar for a highly symbolic and brief meeting with his successor, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

This marked Sall’s first time back in Senegal since he handed over power and left the country in April 2024. The core purpose of Sall's sudden return was to officially solicit Senegal's backing for his candidacy to become the next United Nations Secretary-General. The current UN chief, António Guterres, will see his second term expire on December 31, 2026.
