Australia's Foreign Minister Penny Wong held talks with her Vietnamese counterpart Bui Thanh Son on Monday during a trip to strengthen ties between Canberra and countries in Southeast Asia.

It is Wong's second trip to the region since she was appointed to the post a month ago. The ministers in Hanoi discussed topics including regional security, trade, investment and cooperation in tackling climate change.

Wong is also scheduled to meet with President Nguyen Xuan Phuc and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh before departing for Malaysia, where she was born.
