Astronomers in Western Australia have discovered a bright radio object in the Milky Way that emitted very powerful bursts of radio waves every 18 minutes for up to a minute each time Studies of data from 2018 showed the unknown energy source emitting the radio transmissions over a period three months.
The astronomers who made the discovery think this is a new type of space object but are yet to identify it. Artificial sources such as potential alien lifeforms or interferences coming from the Earth have been ruled out. The object was found by Curtin University PhD student Tyrone O'Doherty working at the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) in Western Australia. The discovery was published in the journal Nature on Wednesday.
