Police in riot gear were deployed to Mexico's Tijuana border crossing to San Diego on Friday after activists gathered at the site to protest a wave of femicides that have rocked the nation. An average of ten women a day is killed in Mexico, and 2019 marked a new overall homicide record. Victims of femicide increased 10% in 2019 to over 1,000. Protests calling for more to be done to end gender-based violence have galvanized with the recent murder of seven-year-old girl. On March 9, a woman's strike has been called under the slogan "A Day Without Women". It is the first strike of its kind in Mexico's history.
