75th Independence Day of Sri Lanka: Embassy holds celebration in Yangon

Celebration of the 75th Anniversary (Diamond Jubilee) Independence Day of Sri Lanka was held at the Pan Pacific Hotel in Yangon on Friday evening. The celebration began with Union Minister for Religious Affairs and Culture U Ko Ko, Sri Lankan Ambassador and Russian Ambassador lighting the traditional candle to commemorate 75th Independence Day of Sri Lanka. And, it continued with playing the National anthems of Myanmar and Sri Lanka. Also, the Union Minister U Ko Ko and the Sri Lankan Ambassador to Myanmar H.E. Mr. J.M.J.P. Bandara.

Ambassador of Sri Lanka, H.E. Mr. J.M.J.P. Bandara said “On 4th of February 1948, we gained the independence from the British Colonial system. So, now today, we’re celebrating our 75th Anniversary of Independence, that's our Diamond Jubilee of Independence. So, we’re happy to be here in Myanmar because we have very close cultural ties based on Theravada Buddhism. Last month on 4th of January, Myanmar celebrated the 75th Anniversary of their Independence, right after one month back today, we’re celebrating our Independence in Myanmar."

This celebration included 10 kinds of traditional performance and reception of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.

Ambassador of Sri Lanka, H.E. Mr. J.M.J.P. Bandara said “In the future, we’re always looking forward to strengthen our ties between Myanmar and Sri Lanka because our historic relationship goes back to 1050. Your first King, your forefather, King Anawrahta, also very good friend of the Great King Vijayabahu of Sri Lanka. So, King Vijayabahu, the one who offered the Sinhala Tripitakat to King Anawrahta to form Bagan Kingdom. So, we’re maintaining that historic relationship. We’re looking forward to strengthen our cultural, economical, social ties between Sri Lanka and Myanmar. I’m really happy to be here in Yangon, celebrating our 75th anniversary of Independence."

Myanmar and Sri Lanka have stronger ties and relations for centuries, sharing many historical, cultural and religious affairs as Theravada Buddhist countries. And also, the two countries promulgated declaration of independence in 1948, Myanmar on the 4th of January and Sri Lanka on the 4th of February. This Celebration of the 75th Anniversary (Diamond Jubilee) Independence Day of Sri Lanka was attended by ambassadors and many other Myanmar and foreign officials.
