117th Anniversary zoological garden: Over 1,360 animals with over 130 species displayed

Celebration of the 117th Anniversary of Yangon Zoological Gardens is being held from 27th to 29th January at the Zoological Gardens, in Mingala Taungnyunt Township of Yangon Region.

During the three days celebration, food stalls and educative display booths are opened from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Likewise, over 1,360 animals with over 130 species are being showcased by categorizing three groups such as 42 species of mammals, 69 species of avian and 19 species of reptile.      

General Manager, Environmental Conservation & Education Dept., Kyi Soe Lwin said "We exhibit educative display booths annually at the Yangon Zoological Gardens. This time, we prepared to display highlighting history of the gardens at our display booth. And our department also distributes pamphlets to the public with the aims at sharing knowledge about the history of the gardens."

The educative display booth of the Environmental Conservation and Education Department shares the knowledge to the public regarding with trafficking body part of the wild life, illegal trading and killing them around the world and raising public awareness for those who are visiting the 117th Anniversary of Yangon Zoological Gardens.

By such a sharing knowledge, they can have awareness not to buy the accessories made of wild animals’ body parts for example combs and handle of knives made of ivory, not to eat their meat and not to keep them.

Nan Tone Kham, Visitor, Nu Kids Preschool said "I come here with my students. Our preschool arrange zoo trip for children annually in opening season and the topic for this month of the children is about the animals. So, we visit to the Yangon Zoological Gardens to gain knowledge of the animals."

Likewise, taxidermy animal’s bodies and horns are being displayed for the public and also game shows, quizzes and performances of tame animals are included for children at the 117th Anniversary of the Yangon Zoological Gardens.
