Venezuela's opposition leader Machado returns from exile

Venezuela's opposition leader and Nobel laureate Maria Corina Machado has returned home after months in exile. In December last year, Machado secretly left Venezuela to attend the award ceremony for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize. The Venezuelan opposition announced her return on Sunday and posted on social media pictures of Machado surrounded by her supporters.

In January, former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, was captured and sent to the United States in a military operation conducted by the administration of President Donald Trump.  Since then, Maduro's close aide Delcy Rodriguez has been in power as interim president. Machado argues that the interim president has no legitimacy, and calls for the swift transfer of power and elections.
