One dead and 90 rescued in floods in Spain

A 102-year-old woman died and 90 people rescued after extreme torrential rains triggered severe flash floods in the southeastern Spanish town of Madrigueras. The town of 4,760 residents was hit by an unprecedented 5.6 inches rains in just a few hours.

The storm quickly transformed streets into raging rivers, sweeping cars away and stacking them against walls. Madrigueras sits lower than much of the surrounding landscape and this terrain acted as a funnel, forcing immense volumes of uphill runoff directly into the town.
