Shell-led venture to double capacity of Canada gas project

British oil giant Shell and its partners announced on Tuesday the expansion of a vast liquefied natural gas facility in Canada, in order to boost exports to Asia. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has pledged to make the country an easier place to invest, including by cutting red tape on large-scale energy projects. 

Mark Carney, Canadian Prime Minister said  "Today's investment, as you know, over $30 billion in LNG Canada 2 will make LNG Canada the second largest facility of its kind in the world. It will connect low-cost, low-carbon Canadian energy to global markets. It will provide secure supply our partners in Asia and Europe need." 

The decision in the LNG Canada venture will double the site's capacity to 28 million tonnes a year, the company said. The project would provide a shorter route than via the Gulf of Mexico and one that avoids chokepoints such as the Panama Canal.
