Hurricane Polo sweeps over Mexico's Pacific coast

Hurricane Polo struck Mexico's Baja California Sur as a Category 3 storm, causing localized flooding, power outages, and roof damage before moving inland as a weakened tropical storm. Landfall hit the southern part of the Baja California Peninsula before crossing the Gulf of California to make a second move into mainland Mexico.

The storm's soggy remnants tracked toward the U.S. Southwest, bringing heavy rains to parts of New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Texas. Meteorologists noted that Polo was fueled by exceptionally warm Pacific waters driven by a strong El Niño season.
