Hurricane Polo strengthens to top category 5 off Mexico

Hurricane Polo intensified into a rare Category 5 storm off the Pacific coast of Mexico on Tuesday. Polo intensified from category 1 to category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale in less than 24 hours.

The National Hurricane Center forecasted that Polo will skirt along southwestern Mexico without making direct landfall, eventually turning back out to sea. School were suspended in vulnerable Pacific states, and the National Guard deployed under disaster relief plans.
