Historic Aztec document on display after being returned to Mexico on loan from France

An exhibition of the historic Azcatitlan Codex has opened in Mexico City Thursday, thanks to a loan from France, which refuses to return it. The Mexican government has been calling for the return of this important document for years.

It is a historical chronicle painted in the 16th century by Indigenous artists following the fall of the Aztec Empire to Spanish rule. It arrived in Mexico on loan from France's Bibliotheque Nationale, where it has been since 1898. The temporary loan is occurring as the two nations celebrate 200 years of diplomatic ties.
