Electricity Supply: Power restored from Shwekyin Hydropower Plant

The 230-kV Shwekyin–Thayakone power line has been repaired, allowing electricity from the Shwekyin Hydropower Plant to be sent back to the national grid.

The power line was damaged in September 2023, when 11 transmission towers collapsed in Nyaunglebin Township. This prevented about 75 MW of electricity from being transmitted and contributed to power shortages in Yangon and Ayeyawady Regions and other areas. After repair work involving around 300 electricity workers, with support from local residents and security personnel, the line was restored on August 30, 2026.

The repairs have added about 80 MW to the national grid, generating around 3.2 million units of electricity per day. According to the Ministry of Electricity and Energy, Yangon has been able to receive electricity around the clock since September 9, except when faults occur. The ministry said it will continue repairing damaged power lines to improve electricity supply across the country.
