The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said its forecasts showed a near 100-percent likelihood that the current El Nino phenomenon will persist through next February.
The WMO said on Thursday that, fueled by exceptionally warm ocean conditions across the tropical Pacific, the present El Nino event is expected to strengthen further during the coming months to a very strong intensity. The organization says the phenomenon is predicted to peak toward the end of this year, with climate impacts continuing well into 2027.
The WMO warned that a stronger El Nino could have big impacts on rainfall and temperature patterns, as well as the associated risks of floods, drought and extreme heat. The organization called on countries to make preparations.
