Romania swelters in above-average summer heat. Hot summers have become the norm in recent years, with an increasing number of days reaching temperatures above 35°C.
Sixty years ago, however, temperatures above 25°C were the exception, especially in the Transylvanian Plateau, where temperatures have seen some of the most significant increases in recent years. Bistrița-Năsăud has seen the largest increase in the number of hot days per year over the past half-century. According to data from the National Meteorological Administration, 80 percent of all heatwave summers recorded in Romania have occurred in the past 14 years.
