Myanmar’s GW-11 rice is currently receiving the highest price among rice exported to the Philippines, according to the Myanmar Rice Federation. Myanmar is selling GW-11 rice to the Philippines at about 580 US dollars per ton, compared with 480 US dollars per ton for Thailand’s rice.
Strong demand is mainly due to the quality and taste of the GW-11 variety. Myanmar has exported nearly 800,000 tons of rice from April to August, including rice from the Aemahta group. Demand from the Philippines has continued to increase as consumers become more familiar with GW-11. The variety is mainly grown in Ayeyawady, Yangon, Bago, Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw.
It is a high-yielding summer paddy that produces around 150 to 200 baskets per acre. The Myanmar Rice Federation said farmers should maintain the quality of GW-11 and expand separate cultivation to meet growing export demand.
