Spain has introduced temporary border checks on air and sea arrivals from Italy. The controls began at midnight on August 8 and will last until September 7.

This tit-for-tat move is a response to Italy’s earlier decision to restrict travel from Spain following a massive migrant influx into the Spanish North African enclave of Ceuta.

Italian government suspended parts of the border-free Schengen arrangement for travelers from Spain, aiming to prevent onward movement. Madrid called Italy's actions unjustified, issuing a warning before launching matching temporary random document checks at ports and airports.
