A New Mexico state judge ordered Meta to pay a $567 million penalty on Friday. The order was confirmed that the company created a "public nuisance" by addicting teenagers and failing to protect children from online sexual exploitation on its platforms.
Raul Torrez, New Mexico Attorney General said "They were not honest with parents and policymakers and families, not only in this state but around the world. And so now they must pay the price for the choice that they made to put profits over children's safety."
It was the first time a US court has found a social media firm guilty of creating a "public nuisance", amid thousands of lawsuits claiming Meta had put children at risk.
