The UN World Food Program (WFP) warned on Wednesday that more than 18 million people across East and Southern Africa could face worsening food insecurity due to El Nino.
The Deputy spokesman for UN Secretary-General said that El Nino poses a significant threat to food security for millions of people who are already in a vulnerable situation. Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesman said "The World Food Programme shows that the strengthening El Nino weather pattern is set to significantly worsen food insecurity in some of the world's most vulnerable countries, and El Nino could push at least 49 million more people into acute food insecurity by the end of 2027."
According to the WFP, El Nino is expected to peak between September and December, its impact on future harvest cycles will extend through 2027.
