Typhoon Noul moves towards Guangdong, prompting emergency responses, mass evacuations

Typhoon Noul strengthened into a typhoon on Saturday, and meteorological agencies warned of heavy to severe rainfall over the next three days.

More than 20,000 ​people ‌were relocated in areas across Guangdong by Friday evening. Guangdong began suspending rail ​services on Saturday, with high-speed and regular trains expected to be halted on Sunday. From Saturday, operations at airports across Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Xiamen may be affected, authorities said.

As well, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao bridge ‌has suspended operations on Saturday and ​Sunday. With Typhoon Noul also expected to affect the neighboring Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Guangxi activated Level-IV emergency responses, suspended 40 ferry crossings and began releasing water from reservoirs to prepare for expected flooding.
