Japan is bracing for the combined impact of Tropical Storms Mekkhala and Higos. The storms are merging with a stalled seasonal rain front, bringing torrential downpours and high-level landslide warnings.

The combination of storms and rain fronts has battered wide swaths of southern and western Japan, and is expected to track toward densely populated areas including Nagoya, Osaka, and the Tokyo region. Authorities have issued evacuation advisories affecting about a million people, with hundreds of flights canceled and localized factory shutdowns.
