President of India Droupadi Murmu traveled to Omkareshwar, to attend the state-level commemoration of International Sickle Cell Day which observed annually on June 19. The event served as a major platform to highlight India's aggressive healthcare push to eliminate sickle cell anemia—a genetic blood disorder that disproportionately impacts the nation's tribal communities.

During her address, President Murmu praised the massive progress made under the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission, originally launched in 2023.  She revealed that the mission has hit a historic public health milestone ahead of its projected timeline, making it one of the largest genetic screening campaigns anywhere in the world.
