Authorities said the death toll from the massive earthquake that struck the southern Philippines on Monday has risen to 37, with at least 400 others injured and four people missing. The epicenter of the magnitude 8.2 quake was close to Mindanao, where extensive damage has been reported, including collapsed buildings.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has directed government agencies to assess the extent of the damage and prepare evacuation centers. According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, around 1,000 earthquakes have been recorded in the area as of Tuesday morning. Authorities warn that aftershocks could continue.
