The US Geological Survey said a powerful earthquake struck off the southern Philippine island of Mindanao at around 23:38 UTC on Sunday. The quake had an estimated magnitude of 8.2. The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, said that there is a risk of tsunami waves across wide regions, including the Philippines, Indonesia and Japan.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said on social media that he has directed government agencies to act immediately. He warned people in the affected areas to “heed the tsunami warning” and move to higher ground.
