Vietnamese dragon fruit farmers apply energy-saving lights

In Viet Nam’s LâmĐồng Province, the organic dragon fruit cooperative illuminates a large area of crops at night to induce flowering. Formerly, high-wattage incandescent bulbs were used, resulting in significant electricity consumption.

The cooperative has since switched to low-power 9W LED bulbs and optimized lighting schedules, reducing costs while maintaining efficiency. Instead of flood irrigation, many had adopted misting and drip systems, improving water control and lowering electricity consumption. Consequently, dragon fruit growers can control flowering to meet market demand and they are now adapting their practices to use power effectively and control costs.
