The Ministry of Foreign Affairs celebrated its 79th Anniversary on March 17, 2026, with a series of events held in Nay Pyi Taw, divided into three parts.

The celebrations included an alms-offering ceremony to the members of Sangha at 6:00 AM, an award presenting ceremony for outstanding staff at 10:00 AM, and a commemorative dinner with dance competitions at 6:00 PM. First, Union Minister U Than Swe, along with Ministry of Foreign Affairs staff and their families, led the alms-offering ceremony to five invited monks, offering them with alms and offertories.

Merits accumulated from all the donations were shared by pouring water, and the monks recited Paritta Suttas and offered blessings. Breakfast was served to the attending guests. Following this, an award presenting ceremony was held to honor staff members who had excelled in training courses conducted at the Civil Services Academies (Upper Myanmar and Lower Myanmar) as well as those who had won prizes in various events during the December sports competitions held within the ministry.

In his address at the ceremony, Union Minister U Than Swe highlighted that Myanmar's diplomatic history spans over 2,000 years, with successive governments consistently pursuing an independent, active, and non-aligned foreign policy. He noted that Myanmar has currently established diplomatic relations with 127 countries and operates 52 embassies and consulates-general abroad.

The State has been practicing Engagement and Harmony Oriented Diplomacy, allowing active participation in international and regional cooperation over the past five years. Efforts to enhance the country's image and prestige have included robust defense at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and effective collaboration with relevant ministries in combating online scams with a zero-tolerance policy.

He also mentioned the successful invitation of international observers for the multi-party democracy general elections, which helped build trust and respect for the country. The Union Minister further emphasized that diplomacy has become increasingly important in today's world, stressing the need to continuously cultivate capable diplomatic generations by combining experience, competence, and learning across generations.

He specially commended the staff families who dutifully served during challenges such as the Mandalay earthquake in 2025. He urged everyone to collectively face and overcome all challenges with united strength and to tirelessly work towards advancing the national interests of the country, it’s learnt.
