The Union Minister for Energy, U Ko Ko Lwin, received a delegation led by Dr. Khalid Bin Mohammed Al Attiya, former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense of the State of Qatar, on the evening of December 22 at the Yanantha Hall of the Ministry of Energy in Nay Pyi Taw.
During the meeting, Dr. Khalid Bin Mohammed Al Attiya explained Qatar’s interest in expanding investment activities in Myanmar, particularly in offshore oil and natural gas exploration and production. He also discussed prospects for comprehensive cooperation between Myanmar and Qatar in the energy sector, as well as intentions to initiate investments in the offshore Block M-10 (Min Ye Thu Project) and the Yedagon Project.
In response, the Union Minister expressed his great pleasure at meeting Dr. Khalid Bin Mohammed Al Attiya for the second time and noted that the relationship had become even closer and more cordial. He welcomed Qatar’s interest in investing in the offshore Block M-10 (Min Ye Thu Project) and the Yedagon Project. He explained that production at the Yedagon offshore project has been declining, making it necessary to implement enhanced production projects to increase output. As the Yedagon block produces not only natural gas but also light crude oil, increased production would bring significant benefits.
The Union Minister further noted that the M-10 (Min Ye Thu Project) and the Yedagon Project are located close to each other, offering advantages in sharing nearby infrastructure. He added that pipelines have already been constructed to transport oil and natural gas produced from these projects for both domestic use and export.
Therefore, he expressed his belief that investment in these projects would be highly beneficial. He also highlighted that Qatar is a leading country with extensive experience, advanced technology, and strong capital in the oil and natural gas sector. The meeting concluded with an open and cordial exchange of views, with both sides expressing confidence that energy-sector cooperation between Myanmar and Qatar would bring substantial mutual benefits.
