Union Minister for Industry Dr Charlie Than on Saturday visited the Central Chemical Testing Laboratory in Insein Township and inspected the progress of construction works.

On August 26, 2013, the Prevention and Protection of Hazard from Chemical and Related Materials Law was enacted, followed by the relevant by-laws on January 12, 2016. Under this legal framework, business licenses, registration certificates, and approvals for chemical-related activities have been issued. To ensure the quality and safety of chemical substances, a Central Chemical Testing Laboratory and an Appeal Laboratory were designated by the central supervisory body. These labs are essential for testing imported, exported, and transit chemical materials to prevent harm to humans and the environment.

The central laboratory is responsible for analyzing the quality of chemicals and identifying harmful elements such as arsenic, selenium, and heavy metals using technologies like Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS). It also helps classify chemicals based on hazard levels and oversees the proper management of chemical waste to prevent pollution.

The lab supports international agreements Myanmar is party to and provides guidance and safety training to businesses to avoid misuse of chemical sciences.
