The Embassy of India in Myanmar organized the “Jayatu Bharatam” Lecture Series at the Swami Vivekanand Cultural Center (SVCC) in Yangon on Friday, commemorating the 164th birth anniversary of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore.

The event, co-hosted with the Tagore Society of Myanmar, aimed to celebrate Tagore’s literary contributions and his historic ties with Myanmar. Indian Ambassador Mr. Abhay Thakur, along with representatives from the Tagore Society, All-Myanmar Hindu Central Council, Myanmar-India Friendship Society and Indian Mission officials attended the event.

[Soundbite] Tagore Society, President, Dr. Hla Htun: "Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore visited Myanmar three times in 1916, 1924 and 1927. He stayed at the Guardian House during his visits. His trips helped build a strong cultural and literary link between India and Myanmar. This connection is still alive today. There will be another session of the “Jayatu Bharatam” Lecture Series in Yangon and after that, events will be held in other cities like Zeyawaddy, Kyauktaga, Mawlamyaing and Mandalay."

The event also featured dance performances and poetry recitations by students of SVCC and the Tagore Society of Myanmar. Building on the momentum of last year’s Ramayan Vyakhyanmala, the Jayatu Bharatam series seeks to deepen India-Myanmar cultural ties and engage the diaspora.

Upcoming sessions are scheduled for Yangon, followed by events in Zeyawaddy, Kyauktaga, Mawlamyaing and Mandalay. The series not only honours Tagore’s enduring legacy but also aims to promote his values of compassion, unity and hope, fostering greater philosophical and cultural exchange between the two nations.
