Lebanon's new Prime Minister Nawaf Salam prayed over the tomb of former prime minister Rafic Hariri on the 20th anniversary of his assassination in downtown Beirut.

Rafic Hariri and 22 others, including a suspected suicide bomber, died in a massive car bomb blast on Beirut's waterfront on February 14, 2005. Rafic Hariri, a towering political figure who oversaw Lebanon's reconstruction era after the 1975-1990 civil war, had recently resigned as premier when he was killed in February.

The commemoration comes days before the deadline for implementing a Hezbollah-Israel ceasefire, which ended more than a year of hostilities that weakened the group.
