Workshop on FCRD: MNREC UM attended and gave an opening speech

A workshop on Forest Conservation and Rural Development under the project of Model Forest for Livelihood Improvement of Forest Dependent Communities through the Development of Community-based Enterprises and Forest Conservation (AFOCO/015/2020) was held at the In-Gyin Hall of Forest Department in Nay Pyi Taw on Monday.

The event was attended by the Union Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation, U Khin Maung Yi, along with permanent secretary, departmental officials and representatives from relevant sectors, local residents from Bago Region and Shan State, as well as other officials.In his address, Union Minister U Khin Maung Yi mentioned that 10-year reforestation plan has been successfully carried out, covering more than 160,000 acres of state-owned land, with over 146 million plants being cultivated.

He highlighted that efforts to expand forest cover are ongoing, alongside activities to prevent natural disasters and ensure a continuous supply of water resources. Furthermore, 18 types of watershed areas conservation projects are being implemented.

He emphasized the importance of working with local communities and relevant departments to ensure the sustainability of forest conservation activities and rural development. He encouraged continued efforts to create better management, opportunities, and programs for long-term progress.Next, the Director General of the Forest Department, Dr. Thaung Naing Oo, presented detailed information about forest conservation and rural development.

Following this, the Union Minister reviewed and inspected the posters displayed at the venue, with relevant officials providing additional clarifications.During the workshop, participants discussed the concept and progress of community-based forest establishment, the potential for integrating forest management with community development, the prospects for ecosystem services, and the feasibility of developing tourism-based businesses rooted in local communities. These discussions were presented in detail according to different sectors by the attendees.
