In Tasmania's Derwent Valley, a new partnership is aiming to better support young people in the community. Every week, this community space is a flurry of activity. As kids in the valley runs an after school care program. It’s just about providing all that social, emotional learning.
The organisation plans to expand its services to teenagers aged up to 18 and is now working with other groups to better help the region’s young people. The Derwent Valley council-led collaboration was inspired by the concerns of local young people, who said they were worried about education, safety and well-being.
It aims to get youth-focused services talking to each other and identifying gaps. The council hopes this collaboration will help give local young people the tools they need to thrive. But says providing training and job opportunities is also essential and will need investment from the state and federal governments.
