The Congo River has burst its banks, causing widespread flooding in DR Congo's capital Kinshasa, with dark, unpleasant-smelling water pouring into homes across several neighbourhoods and affecting local businesses in the central African megacity.
The water level of the Congo River has reached 6.2 meters above sea level, just below the 1961 record of 6.26 meters. The flooding comes after a month of exceptionally heavy rainfall, which has also triggered deadly landslides and building collapse. At least 300 people were killed and 300000 households affected due to floods.
