





Health care services are being rendered to infants at the Neonatal intensive care unit in the Central Women’s Hospital (Yangon).
The Neonatal intensive care unit was established in 1981, the new facility of the building was built in 2018 and the building was upgraded in 2020. The Neonatal intensive care unit is facilitated with international standard sterilized rooms to reduce the death rate of newborn babies.
Dr. Khin Maung Gyi ,Medical Superintendent ,Central Women’s Hospital (Yangon) said " In 2022, there were 7,058 live birth infants in the hospital. The hospital gave a birth to more than 3,300 infants as of June this year. Of them, over 670 newborns were given treatments at the intensive care unit. Premature and low birth-weight infants, Anaemia babies, respiratory distress and infants who are born from the high risk group mothers who are suffered from hypertension, pre-eclampsia and twin pregnancy, are given intensive treatments. Newborn babies with jaundice symptoms are also given treatments at the intensive care unit."
The Human Milk Bank was also established at the Neonatal intensive care unit of the hospital. It has engaged with the Southeast Asia Human Milk Bank Association and the European Milk Bank Association. The Human Milk Bank is providing human milk to the infants who do not get breast milk due to various reasons.
Dr. Khin Maung Gyi, Medical Superintendent , Central Women’s Hospital (Yangon) said " The breast milk from healthy mothers are collected and then sterilized. The Human Milk Bank distributes the collected breast milk to infants according to their health needs. The breast milk is provided to premature and low birth-weight infants and babies who need to conduct surgical operation before breast milk is not available from mothers."
Out of the infants who are born at the Central Women’s Hospital (Yangon), 15 to 20 percent of newborns have been given intensive care.
