Disaster Management: DDM And UNOCHA Sign Letter Of Agreement

The Department of Disaster Management of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement signed a letter of Agreement-LoA with United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs at the Department of Disaster Management on Wednesday.

At the event, Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr  Thet Thet Khine said that signing LoA with UNOCHA will provide strengthening more natural disaster management measures led by the government, emergency responses, capacity enhancement between Tatmadaw and ministries for disaster response, technical assistance, preparedness and plans to cooperate in data management.

The Union Minister explained the Ministry’s efforts for disaster management from the national level to region/state/district and township levels, humanitarian assistance and social development tasks regardless of racism and religion. She added that the Ministry is ready to cooperate with volunteers, civil service organizations, UN and INGOs and said that partner organizations need to carry out the tasks in line with the State’s existing law, rules and regulations and the Ministry’s policies. 

The Head of UNOCHA Office in Myanmar reported the tasks to be cooperated, efforts for humanitarian assistance and future work programs. Later, the Director General of the Department of Disaster Management and the Head of UNOCHA (Myanmar) signed the letter of Agreement and exchanged the documents.

During the LoA term, the UNOCHA will carry out disaster management, emergency response measures, capacity building and providing technical assistance in cooperation with the Department of Disaster Management.
