Relatives of residential school survivors stood outside the Sacred Heart Church in Edmonton Monday evening to catch a glimpse of Pope Francis as he arrived to meet an Indigenous group.
The pope, who needed the help of a wheelchair for the visit, asked his aides to take him closer to the people that had gathered. Many of them felt that the Pope's apology earlier in the day was just the first step on the path toward reconciliation. The first pope from the Americas was determined to make this trip, even though torn knee ligaments forced him to cancel a visit to Africa earlier this month. Pope Francis begged forgiveness from Indigenous survivors of residential schools in Canada calling their treatment at the ends of the church a "deplorable evil."
