Myanmar is a Buddhist country and almost every household offers flowers to Buddha. The markets of flowers are booming and over 80% are used for religious purposes.
Chrysanthemum flowers are the best seller in Myanmar flower market and, the Plant Biotechnology Center make research on this flower.
In Myanmar Agriculture sector, the horticultural sector is less developed than other sectors. That’s why, the Plant Biotechnology center is researching on these flowers, an official of the center said.
Dr. May Thin Khine, Staff Officer, Plant Biotechnology Center said "We started researching on the flowers because the horticultural sector is still weak in the country. So, we researched the Chrysanthemum and it is the best demand in the flower market. We apply gamma radiation methods extensively in making research for plant reproduction. The most common method is pollinate method by choosing the plant species. However, that method takes longer time and we use the gamma radiation to develop new species in a shorter period. "
By producing new varieties of flowers locally, Myanmar can reduce the illegally imported flowers market. On the other hand, flower growers will get more income by selling seedlings in small flower pots obtained through the use of gamma radiation.
