

The prices of onions rose to 2,000 kyats per viss in the Mandalay market, according to onion traders. The summer onions are booming in Mandalay market and good price.
The summer onions are usually grow in the mid Tabaung of Myanmar calendar. Last month, the onion prices were 1000 kyats per viss and now the onion prices peaked at 2000 kyats per viss.
Soe Win Myint, Trader (Mandalay) said “The onions produced from Meikhtila, Myingyan, Pakokku, Myinmu and Monywa enter the market now. In the last month, the onion was priced at 1000 kyats. At present, the onion price exceeded to 2000 kyats per viss.”
According to the trader in Mandalay, the onion market collapsed last year and some growers even left the plantations unharvested due to a lack of demand. Thanks to price hike during the harvest time this year, the growers are financially doing well.
Soe Win Myint, Trader (Mandalay) said “The large quantity of summer onion is flowing into the Mandalay market. There is a regular demand from the markets of neighboring countries such as Bangladesh and Thailand in additional to local consumption. Traders also keep the onion stocks in their hands.”
The onions are commonly grown in Mandalay, Sagaing and Magway regions. It is cultivated near the riverbank with an irrigation system in the upper Myanmar region.
