The Cuban government thanked Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador for his international political position in defense of the island, especially now that the US seeks to eliminate the Caribbean nation from an upcoming Summit of the Americas. López Obrador ended a four-day tour of Central America and the Caribbean in Cuba.
He visited Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Belize, countries that have a large number of migrants traveling through Mexico. The visit to Cuba takes place amid a drastic increase in emigration on the island, a route that usually begins with trips by the islanders to Nicaragua --where a visa is not required-- and continues through irregular routes to the US, crossing all Mexico. The presidents signed agreements on trade, health, education and cooperation. López Obrador returns to Mexico Sunday evening.
