International Relations: Foreign Policy Committee meeting held in Nay Pyi Taw

Foreign Policy Committee held its meeting in Nay Pyi Taw on Thursday, Chairman of the Committee, Chairman of the State Administration Council Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing discussed that being an independent and sovereign nation, the international relations is an important matter.

Section 41 of the State Constitution 2008 mentioned that “The Union practises independent, active and non-aligned foreign policy aimed at world peace and friendly relations with nations and upholds the principles of peaceful co-existence among nations”. With this policy, Myanmar stands neutral in international relations and also involves in Non-Align Movement.

As a member of the United Nations, Myanmar made its most involvement in the international relations. In terms of regional level relations, Myanmar became a member of ASEAN in 1997, and also has good bilateral relations with its five neighbouring countries. Myanmar Representative Office was also set up in the United Nations and ambassadors have been assigned to engage in international arena.

The allegation of Gambia against Myanmar at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) started from the relations with the neighbouring Bangladesh which initiated in the colonial era. It was an attempt to tarnish the image of the nation and Tatmadaw with alleged accusations. The Prime Minister said that the oral arguments made at the ICJ by Myanmar delegation were very satisfaction, and expressed his appreciations to the concerned officials.

It was followed by the detailed explanations of Myanmar delegation to ICJ about their oral arguments as well as the discussions on the works related to foreign policy and Russia-Ukraine conflict. The Prime Minister pointed out the needs to nurture human resources for the field of International Law. He instructed to make preparation measures whatever the decision came out by the ICJ, and stressed to practice the foreign policy of the country concerning the international affairs.
