The European Union's top diplomat called it “a defining moment for European history,” as the bloc's 27 foreign ministers have greenlighted unprecedented support for Ukraine.

EU would provide $502 million to provide lethal arms, lethal assistance, to the Ukrainian army, and $56 million for non-lethal supplies, fuel and protective equipment. EU defense ministers will discuss how to convert the funds into useful military materia l. Poland has agreed to act as a hub to distribute the arms and equipment.

Josep Borrell, European Union High Representative said "Another taboo has fallen these days. The taboo that the European Union cannot use their resources to provide arms to a country who's been aggressed by another. Yes, they are unprecedented times because the war is back in our borders," .

To bolster its military training and support missions around the world, the 27-nation bloc has set up a European Peace Facility; a fund with a ceiling of around $6.4 billion. Some of the money can be used to train and equip partner countries, including with lethal weapons. The move comes a day after Germany announced a major shift in policy to send weapons and other supplies directly to Ukraine. Among them are 500 "Stinger" missiles, which are used to shoot down helicopters and warplanes, and 1,000 anti-tank weapons.
