Rare twin elephants were born in Kenya's Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya this week. The twin elephants, one male and one female, are less than a week old and were discovered by guides from nearby Elephant Watch Camp on Sunday.

According to elephant researchers with Save the Elephants, the birth of twins elephants is a rare occurrence that only happens in 1 percent of elephant births.

Elephants have the largest gestation period in mammals, lasting 22 months. Save the Elephants, an NGO that works to support elephant conservation, say they will do their best to monitor the new twins' health over the coming days.
