Hamster lovers in Hong Kong staked out government offices on Thursday to try and rescue any hamsters being handed over after authorities announced a cull prompted by COVID-19 cases traced to a pet shop, according to a report on Hong Kong's Cable TV.

The volunteers stood outside the gate of a suburban office of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, where hamsters bought after December 22, 2021, are required to be brought for virus testing and to be humanely killed.

Pet owners in Hong Kong who have hamsters bought even before the deadline have been trying to get rid of them, according to the report.  That's why volunteer hamster lovers have stepped in to try and rescue any unwanted animals.
