Officials from Iraq and the Manhattan District Attorney's office gathered on Tuesday to mark the repatriation of priceless ancient artifacts seized in the illegal antiquities trade.
Two of the pieces on display were objects purchased by billionaire Michael Steinhardt -- an 8th century B.C. gold bowl, and an ivory plaque. The items also included artifacts from Israel. Investigators say the gold bowl was looted from Nimrud, Iraq and eventually trafficked by the Islamic State group, and was first spotted in 2019 as well as the ivory plaque once belonged to the King of Sargon. It's valued at $450,000.Museums worldwide are facing greater scrutiny over the provenance — or chain of ownership — of their art, particularly those looted from conflict zones or illegally plundered from archaeological sites. There are growing calls for such items to be returned to their countries of origin.
